Wood County Hospital CME Program Reaccredation
Wood County Hospital’s (WCH) Continuing Medical Education (CME) program was recently reaccredited as an intrastate provider of continuing medical education for physicians by the Ohio State Medical Association (OSMA). In order to receive reaccreditation, Wood County Hospital went through a survey process this past fall. During the on-site review, the three person OSMA survey team evaluated WCH’s CME program to ensure it met the established criteria for educational planning and quality. The accreditation was awarded for 4 years and was based on WCH’s compliance with 13 criteria, including that the provider “generates activities/ educational interventions that are designed to change competence, performance, or patient outcomes as described in its mission statement.”
Although WCH began delivering continuing medical education programs in 2001, it first sought accreditation in 2005 and has maintained accreditation since. The CME program provides medical professionals with the ongoing knowledge and skills they need to provide patients with optimum care. The program continues to evolve to meet the requirements of the WCH physician population and of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME).
The CME program is overseen by the CME Committee, chaired by D. Wayne Bell, MD with Bowling Green Family Care Center, who also founded the program. Dr. Bell has served as the CME chair since 2005. Lori Beeman, Training and Development Specialist at WCH is the CME Coordinator and the committee members include: Robert Lavey, MD, Medical Director of the Maurer Family Cancer Center, and Wood County Hospital Employees Liz Foreman, Vice President of Human Resources, Sandy Beidelschies, Vice President of Patient Services, Meghan Makley, Director of Medical Staff, Todd Leopold, Director of Pharmacy, and Marlene Jett, Nursing Educator. The committee meets monthly to discuss scheduled programs, review recent program evaluations, and propose future programs. The committee conducts an annual survey of physicians and nurse practitioners. This information, along with WCH’s compiled data, is used in the strategic planning process of relevant programs that meet the practice-based needs of our medical professionals.
In 2016, 18 “live activity” CME programs were held with 703 participants in attendance. In addition, WCH held a multidisciplinary Breast Cancer Conference and General Tumor Board once monthly, serving 456 participants. During these sessions, surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologist, radiologists, internists, and neurologists gather to review, discuss, and formulate treatment recommendations for every patient currently diagnosed with breast and other cancers.
