SET Benefits for PAD Patients

Supervised Exercise Therapy (SET) is a clinically proven exercise and education program designed to help patients with Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) who experience symptoms of claudication, a type of muscle pain that occurs during activity and subsides with rest.

What is PAD:
PAD is caused by plaque buildup in the arteries of the legs, blocking blood flow to major muscle groups, such as the buttocks, hips, thighs and calves—often leading to discomfort or pain when walking.

How SET Works:
Patients in the program engage in guided exercises, typically walking on a treadmill, to intentionally bring on symptoms of claudication. Research has shown that exercise is an effective treatment for these symptoms. This approach helps improve circulation and increase blood flow over time, ultimately aiming to extend walking distance and time with minimal pain and discomfort.

Benefits of SET:

  • It can help reduce leg pain during physical activities, such as walking.

  • Improves overall quality of life.

  • Offers results comparable to medication or revascularization procedures.

  • Provides a safe and non-invasive treatment option for individuals experiencing claudication.

At Wood County Hospital, our cardiac rehab team delivers personalized, evidence-based care to help you manage your PAD and get back to doing the things you enjoy and minimizing your symptoms.
