Jane Graffin Receives WOW Award for Outstanding Service

The WOW Patient Experience Initiative recognizes team members who engage with patients/families, visitors and employees in exceptional ways, providing a superior level of commitment and reflecting the values of Wood County Hospital. Jane Graffin, MHE, RD, LD, CDCES Clinical Nutrition Manager/Diabetes Education Program Coordinator, was selected as the August WOW award winner for going above and beyond. 

Jane has worked at WCH for over 16 years as Clinical Nutrition Manager and Diabetes Education Program Coordinator. On a Friday afternoon, Jane was in the surgical waiting room. There, she witnessed a mother who had been sent to WCH for testing after an appointment earlier that morning with her three-year-old boy, who was outwardly grumpy and refusing to listen to his mother. As she passed by, Jane overheard the situation and learned that he hadn’t eaten lunch yet, and it was well past 1:30 p.m. The mother hadn’t planned on being away from home this long, and they were waiting for a ride. The entire waiting room and staff were concerned about the little boy as he continued having an outburst. Understanding the importance of eating regularly, Jane took it upon herself to get the boy lunch from the WCH cafeteria with the help of the dietary staff. The little boy’s behavior quickly changed with his full belly. Needless to say, the mother was very thankful.

Jane graduated from Bowling Green State University with a BS in dietetics and a master’s in food and nutrition. Jane jumped at the opportunity to work at WCH because of how close it is to her home and because of the excellent care she and her daughter experienced in the ER. When asked what Jane enjoys most about her position, she replied, “Working with people here– clients, the dietitians, other employees and volunteers. Helping others to improve their quality of life is very rewarding.”

On days off, Jane enjoys sewing when she has time, as she is a 3rd generation seamstress. She even made her own wedding dress.
