Dealing with Chronic Pain
According to the CDC, approximately 51.6 million adults in the U.S., nearly 21% of the population, live with chronic pain. This common condition is characterized by pain that persists for over three months. Chronic pain can be constant or intermittent, affecting any part of the body. It often interferes with daily activities and can lead to depression, anxiety and trouble sleeping, which can, in turn, make the pain worse.
Chronic pain can develop after an injury or illness and at other times without apparent cause. Unlike acute pain, which subsides once the injury heals, chronic pain persists even after healing. Arthritis and other long-lasting illnesses such as cancer can be a cause. Other common types of chronic pain include:
- Neck pain
- Back pain
- Headaches, including migraines
- Testicular pain
- Lasting pain in scar tissues
- Muscle pain all over
- Neurogenic pain from damage to nerves or other parts of the nervous system.
Chronic pain can also stem from psychological factors such as stress, anxiety and depression. This is known as psychogenic pain or psychosomatic pain.
Physical pain can often lead to emotional challenges, including mood swings, insomnia, fatigue, anxiety and depression. Those living with chronic pain should seek help.
