Specialized vascular, endovascular and phlebology procedures, including numerous vascular bypass and shunt procedures are performed by a vascular surgeon. Additionally, laser-guided, non-surgical procedures are available for the treatment of varicose and spider veins.
Diagnostic testing for the carotid arteries, abdominal aorta and relate vasculature, as well as the peripheral arteries and veins is performed in the Vascular Lab by Registered Vascular Technologists.
Patients generally receive referrals to the lab from their primary care physicians or specialists because they are being treated for high blood pressure and cholesterol and may be experiencing stroke-like symptoms, transient ischemic attacks (“mini-strokes”), carotid bruit, visual disturbances, pain, and/or swelling of the legs just to mention a few.
Vascular diagnostic testing provides the vascular surgeon with a definitive diagnosis to enable him to make a well-informed treatment decision. Depending on the diagnosis, the vascular surgeon may utilize medication therapy, non-surgical intervention or surgical procedures. Innocent Ubunama, DO, vascular surgeon, is the medical director of WCH’s Vascular Services Program.
