New Way To Remove Tonsils
There is a less invasive way to remove tonsils available through Wood County Hospital's Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Services.
Tonsils are two small, fleshy masses located at the back of the mouth and top of the throat that house white blood cells, helping fight off infections from germs entering through the nose or mouth. However, even though they allow you to fight infections, they can also become infected or cause breathing problems such as heavy snoring or sleep apnea. When this happens, removal may be necessary.
A tonsillectomy is the surgical removal of the tonsils that can be performed in various ways. Traditionally, they are removed using a scalpel or cauterization, but through technological advancements, a much less invasive method is available.
This new method removes or shrinks the tonsils through concentrated sound waves, targeting only the problem areas while preserving the rest of the throat's natural state. Benefits to this technique is:
-
Less bleeding and scarring
-
Less painful, and
-
Less risk than traditional procedures
While tonsil removal is more common in children, adults can also experience tonsil issues that require treatment. A patient may benefit from this procedure if they suffer from:
-
Strep throat or tonsillitis often
-
Breathing difficulties due to swollen tonsils
-
Frequent and loud snoring
-
Periods in which you stop breathing during sleep, or sleep apnea
-
Bleeding of the tonsils
-
Cancer of the tonsils
Many people can return to school and work within one to two weeks following the procedure.
