Dietary Team Member Karen B. Receives WOW Award for Going Above and Beyond
The WOW Patient Experience Initiative recognizes team members who engage with patients/families, visitors and employees in exceptional ways, providing a superior level of commitment and reflecting the values of Wood County Hospital. Karen B., dietary aide, was selected as the November WOW award winner for going above and beyond.
While working in the cafeteria, Karen noticed the family of a patient in need at the hospital.
The young mother and toddler didn't have money to purchase food, and the situation could have easily left them without something to eat while waiting. Without hesitation, Karen stepped in and graciously offered to pay for whatever they needed. The mother selected several items for herself and her child, and Karen paid for everything with a smile. Her compassion and selflessness at that moment stood out as an example of what makes Wood County Hospital a special place. Karen didn't just provide food—she offered comfort and support to a family during a difficult time.
The individual who nominated Karen shared that witnessing her act of kindness was genuinely heartwarming. It served as a reminder of how small gestures can have a significant impact and how the people at WCH go above and beyond to care for our patients and their families. Karen's actions reflect the values we strive to uphold daily: compassion, respect and a genuine desire to help others.
Karen has been a valued member of the WCH team for nearly two years. Originally from Columbus, Ohio, she has lived in Wayne, Ohio for the past 35 years and is a proud BGSU alumna with a background in computer graphics. After spending 40 years in an office setting, Karen felt a strong desire for a change and chose to transition into a more people-focused role. She thrives in her work environment, enjoying the positive interactions with her supportive colleagues.
Outside of work, Karen is passionate about designing and crocheting toys as well as creating crafts for children. Her faith plays an important role in her life and she finds fulfillment in illustrating Bible lessons.
Thank you, Karen, for demonstrating the spirit of kindness that makes WCH such a wonderful place for our community.
